Hello, young Gunters! I want to offer 50 coins to the first three Gunters (which means you need to be signed up to play; speak to your Related Arts teacher) to create an 8-bit art self-portrait. For an idea of what that means, take a look at the Key Master page on this website. Please use make8bitart.com to create your portrait.
RULES: 1. Your self-portrait must represent your personality, hobbies, style, etc. 2. Your image must be unique to YOU. You MAY create an image of you as a character, but please do NOT copy existing characters. If you do, your entry will be disqualified. 3. Use a color-scheme which represents your player character and your personality. 4. Save your image as a PNG file from make8bitart.com. You may need to do a little research to figure out how to do that. 5. Once you have created your self-portrait, give it a name and email it to the Key Master at [email protected]. The subject line of the email must read: "8-bits of Awesome!" Answer the following questions in your email:
Good luck, Gunters! Stay tuned for more coin-earning opportunities! A QR code is a nifty little grid which is used to encode various types of data. In the case of the QR codes we are using in VRcade Gunters' Quest for the Golden Egg, the data might be a website, geographic location, or text information. The history of QR codes is interesting, but I won't go into it here.
SAFETY: You should know that some people use QR codes to encode and install viruses on the scanner's device. Do not trust a Qr code whose owner/creator you do not know. Here is how to access the data encoded in a QR code: 1a. If you have an Android, Google, or iPhone (running at least iOS 13), you can use your camera app to scan a QR code and tap a button that appears to access the encoded data. 1b. If you have an older phone or mobile device, you will need to install a Qr code reader app. There are several free apps for your mobile device. 1c. If you are using your Chromebook, you can install a Chrome extension to read Qr codes using your built in camera. You will need to be connected to the internet to access all encoded data. 2. Scan the QR code and access the encoded information. It's that simple. Why the Key Master is using QR codes to help Gunters Play the Quest: QR codes are the simplest method to access large amounts of data. They can be easily created and shared with players. Keep an eye out for QR codes around Fisher Middle School. They will help you earn more coins. Good luck on this Quest, young Gunters! The Key Master has been all-in over the past 10 days on designing the Quest 2020. He is getting very tired, but has been having so much fun building new realms for Gunters to explore. Finding inspiration often looks like going to comic book stores, reading up on Dungeons and Dragons, playing and watching people play old video games, and not sleeping nearly as much as he should.
This old Space Battle game box is the inspiration for the player box set the three top Gunters will receive as their entry into the Quest for the Golden Egg of Anorak on Friday, May 1, 2020. Inside will be all the Gunters need to complete the quest - minus internet enabled devices (see rules). As it stands, the Key Master can not divulge any further information about the contents of the box. More on that will be posted at a later date, so stay tuned. What inspires you to create or do new things?
Going into the 2019-2020 school year, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to connect my students back to this game. Originally, VRcade Gunters were awarded a key for promoting the VRcade project. Since that's all done and we're getting ready to set up the VR system and Alienware PC, a new motivator needed to be developed to search out the next Gunter group.
So, the new contest is about to open. Students who meet the requirements of a great Gunter will be invited to play this round. More information will be posted soon. As the Key Master, I am sworn to secrecy about some of the details of the arrival of a new game. I can tell you these things:
1. The game will take place in 2021 and be played by the winners of the Golden Egg of Anorak from 2019, 2020, and 2021. 2. The game is based online and IRL. 3. There is going to be an AWESOME prize!
If you would like to see the game in progress, you can follow the Key Master at @rgbkeymaster on Instagram and Ken Morrill at @kmorrilldesign on Instagram and Twitter. The build processes will soon become videos available at Design at Scale on YouTube and Ken's website at https://designatscale.weebly.com/.
If you would like to be involved in the next iteration of this game, hit that CONNECT button in the menu and get in contact. I'd love to work with you in whatever capacity we might.
Relabeling these old cartridges (not naming the system on purpose) is just one way to bridge the "ancient" past of video gaming to present technologies. I intentionally created a link from these games to new systems to teach the Gunters how to recycle the old into new, connected technologies.
I can't reveal more before we have a winner, but I promise a video about how all of this was created once this game is done. I want to share the "why", "whats" and "hows" with you all so this can be replicated en masse. I'm also working on developing a kit that schools, community organizations, and businesses can use to build their own custom games, challenges, and incentives for their target demographic. I know these kinds of things exist, but there is a LOT going on behind the scenes that I haven't shown yet. Fare thee well, Gunters, Egg Keepers, and followers along.
If you are one of our Egg Keepers, we want to thank you for protecting our treasures as well as meeting them - our Gunters are the real treasure.
Best to you all, young Gunters and Egg Keeper! |
